"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." Heard that one before? Well, now there's even more research to back it up.

A study released by the Harvard School of Public Health followed the breakfast habits of 52,000 men over the course of 16 years. It found that those who skipped breakfast had a 21 per cent greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

More than two million Canadians have Type 2 diabetes. The condition has been linked to weight gain, which the study said factors directly into what subjects had or didn't have for breakfast. Those who reneged on an early morning meal were more likely to snack throughout the day. Multiple snacks, especially sugary snacks, contribute greatly to weight gain.

Researchers defined a healthy breakfast as one that included food with a low glycemic index; food with high levels of glucose or carbohydrates should be avoided.
  "A double-double and bear claw doesn't cut it," said the CBC's John Northcott, who reported on the study, referring to popular fast-food treats. "You've got to sit down and have some steel cut oats, some nuts, some yogurt, and some protein as well."
